Letter From A Soldier
Seneca B Thrall
1862
This letter was written by Seneca B Thrall to his wife. He was an Assistant Surgeon and a member of the 13th Iowa Infantry - which is why I chose this letter.
I thought this letter shared what life was like for him and the conditions encountered by soldiers during the Civil War. While he did not face duty on the battlefield he treated soldiers who did and they all lived in similar conditions.
I found it interesting that he started all of his letters ‘Dear Wife” rather than addressing her by name. Also, he signed his letters “Your Husband”.

Art Work
“Thanksgiving in Camp”
Winslow Homer
1862
I chose this piece of art to show life during the Civil War because I think it shows many different things. There were different moods on the soldiers faced depending upon where you looked in the picture. Some looked bored, some looked home sick, while others seemed to be enjoying camp - plus some decent food and drink. However, it did not look much like Thanksgiving the was we celebrate today - but you must remember this was wartime.
Also, I am familiar with Winslow Homer and I have seen some of his other pieces of artwork. This one was quite different from those - most of which have boats and not many people.

Reflection
The primary source that I found to be the most helpful was the letter from a soldier. This provided information form the solider to a lover one of what was really happening during the war and the thing that the soldier was really feeling. The soldier letter i found was a reliable sour because all soldiers wrote letters about their experiences and the struggles they faced and their own perspective on what was really happening hearing the first hand experience in stead of the research that has been done by historians.
Secondary source
The secondary source that I found to be helpful was out textbook McDougal Littell The Americans Reconstruction of the 21st Century This provided information that I knew was reliable and detailed enough to get the needed amour of information. The textbook is also a reliable source because it is truly meant as a learning tool for high school students to learn and get information from.
