Harriet Beecher Stowe
Harriet Beecher Stowe was born on June 14, 1811 in Litchfield, Connecticut. She was the daughter of a Reverend, she was the sixth born child of her 8 biological siblings and 3 step siblings. When Harriet was a young girl she would watch the slave ships go off to slave markets where the slaves would be sold, all while she was at home in a privledged family living in the free state of Connecticut. At the age of seven Harriet won an essay contest at her school, she also learned how to successfully make an persuasive argument at the dinner table with all of her siblings. These 2 skills helped her in the publication of over 30 books, one of which being Uncle Tom’s Cabin which was a book that was very strongly against slavery. Once the Civil War had started Harriet met with Abraham Lincoln it is said that she was greeting with Lincoln saying”So you are the little women who wrote the book that started this great war.”

Charles Sumner
Charles Sumer was born January 6, 1811 in Boston Massachusetts. He grew up with his father who was very against slavery. His father said, “freeing the slaves would ‘do us no good’ unless they were treated equally by society.” Charles attended Harvard University where he earned a degree in and became a lawyer, then a Massachusetts senator, and the leader of an anti-slavery group called Radical Republicans. He was always working towards his final goal of destroying the confederacy and slavery.

John Brown
John Brown was a strong believer that slavery should be abolished and often used violence (believing it was God’s will) to work to that end. John was a leader of the anti-slavery movement in Kansas. He also assembled a group of white and black men to steal the weapons from Harpers Ferry Armory. They were going or give those weapons to local slaves and start a rebellion. However, the local slaves did not fight so John Brown and his men were either captured or killed. John Brown, himself, was captured and sent to be hung for the act of treason. He was viewed a a hero to the abolitionists.

Stephen Douglas was born April 23,183 in Brandon, Vermont. In 1833 he moved to Winchester, Illinois. Stephen Douglas, a Democrat, wanted to continue the current slave ad no slave states - keeping the Union as it was. This view denied him the support of many Democrats in the south. He was known as the man behind the Kansas-Nebraska Act and was in favor of popular sovereignty. Douglas beat Lincoln in the state senate race in 1858 but two years later lost to him in the race for United States President. After the election Douglas supported Lincoln’s goal to end slavery.

Lincoln lost the senate race to Douglas two years later the two ran against each other for the Presidency of the United States. That race Lincoln won and became the 16th President of the Untied States. Lincoln winning the presidency was the trigger that started the Civil War. Even though Lincoln was not an abolitionist it did not mean he did not want to end slavery.. He did - and this was a big reason he issued the Emancipation Proclamation. He also wanted the southern states to rejoin the Union. He achieved all of this before his assignation on April 15, 1865.

Jefferson Davis was born on June 3m 1808 in Fairview, Kentucky. In 1828, he graduated from West Point. He was part of both the House of Representatives and the Senate. He also was Secretary of War. Jefferson lived in Mississippi when it left the Union. He held the roles of Secretary of War and President of the Confederacy. After the war Jefferson Davis was sent to Fortress Monroe Prison for two years because he was a suspect in the assassination of President Lincoln. Jefferson was treated very poorly in prison and ended very ill. But he did reagin his health and lived until December 6, 1889.

He resigned from the Army in 1854 as full captain only to come back for the Civil War. When he was appointed Corneal in Springfield, IL then General, the Major General and then General of the Army, and finally Secretary of War. He was the one who got Robert E. Lee to surrender. After the war many people thought he should become president. Ulysses S. Grant became our 18th President. He died on July 23, 1885 of cancer.

He fought in the Mexican-American War and was a commander in the 2nd U.S. Cavalry. He also helped stop and discuss surrender terms with John Brown and his men and Harpers Ferry. He went on to become a teacher at Washington College where he died of a stroke on September 28, 1870.

He was known for the “March to the Sea” going through Atlanta - which was Confederate territory leaving behind much destruction. After the war William became an author and wrote a book about his experiences and the Civil War. He died in 1891.
